THE FOUNDING OF A KINGDOM

In November 1766, Raja Lumu, the leader of the Bugis tribe who ruled the coast of Selangor, set off from his home in Kuala Selangor to visit Sultan Mahmud of Perak in the capital city of Perak.

Several days later, Sultan Mahmud crowned Raja Lumu as the Sultan of Selangor with the name Sultan Salehuddin and bestowed upon him the royal regalia and seal of the king.

Sultan Salehuddin and his entourage then returned from Perak to Kuala Selangor, bringing the royal insignia with them. A ceremony was held to commemorate his elevation to the status of royal ruler.

This significant event in the 18th century is recorded in modern history as fulfilling the "traditional prerequisite for those who wish to be acknowledged as a king in the Malay world."

A Malay kingdom (state) can only be established if there is a sovereign ruler with royal status.

"The territory itself is not as important as its ruler. Without a ruler, there would be no state and no purpose or focus for that particular state."
