Review of the Movie "Upstream" (Chinese): The Journey of a Fighter

Upstream is an extraordinary movie that touches the heart and inspires the soul. The story follows a man who is forced to become an online motorcycle taxi (ojol) driver after losing his job due to a layoff and struggling to find new employment because of his age. This film provides a profound depiction of the daily struggles faced by ojol drivers, especially in delivering food and packages.

With a blend of touching, humorous, and empowering moments, Upstream invites us to understand the immense challenges these individuals endure. Although I have lived in Malaysia and Indonesia and am not entirely sure how the lives of food delivery drivers here are, this film opened my eyes to the universal hardships of their work.

The ojol drivers portrayed in this story are not people chasing wealth. They work tirelessly to meet basic needs, such as paying monthly house installments to avoid losing their homes. Come rain or shine, dealing with rude customers, or facing the risk of accidents—these are challenges they bravely face every day.

What is most touching is their spirit to work not for themselves, but for their families. Even as they grow older and their physical strength diminishes, they continue to strive to ensure their loved ones have a decent life.

I highly recommend this film. Upstream is not just a story about survival, but also about finding happiness in simplicity. The film reminds us that happiness doesn’t have to wait until we are wealthy; it can be felt when the needs of our loved ones are adequately met.

While watching it, I cried—perhaps because I saw parts of my own life reflected in the story. Without hesitation, I give this movie a 10/10 rating. It is my favorite film of 2024, and I am certain it will inspire many others as well.
