"In-Laws Are Deadly" (2024)
"Sometimes, those closest to you cause the deepest wounds."
Now streaming on Netflix, this film left a lasting impression on me when I first watched it in theaters. I can confidently say it’s one of the best family drama films of the year.
When you see the title, you might immediately wonder, “What does it mean? Why mention ‘in-laws’? Is it just a metaphor?” The answer is: No.
The title is deeply rooted in a profound teaching of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), as captured in the following hadith:
> “Beware of entering upon women.” A man from the Ansar asked, “O Messenger of Allah, what about the in-law?” He replied, “The in-law is death.”
(Narrated by Bukhari 5232, Muslim 2172)
Main Theme
The central theme of the movie is infidelity. While it may sound cliché, the film sets itself apart with its emotionally compelling narrative and unique execution.
Synopsis
The story follows Arman and Maya, a seemingly harmonious couple. Their love story began during their college years, culminating in marriage and the birth of their son, Raka. Trouble starts brewing when Maya’s younger sister, Rina, is asked by their parents to live with the family.
What follows is an emotional tragedy: Arman engages in an affair with Rina, his own sister-in-law. This betrayal shatters the trust and harmony that the couple had carefully built over the years.
What makes this film even more gripping is that it’s based on a true story from Indonesia, adding a layer of authenticity and emotional depth.
Highlights
Cinematography: The rural settings, particularly the serene beach scenes, are visually stunning and perfectly complement the storyline.
Performances: The cast delivers outstanding portrayals of their characters, with raw and heartfelt emotions, especially in moments of betrayal and heartbreak.
Overall Recommendation
I wholeheartedly recommend this film—not just as entertainment, but as a reflection on life’s boundaries and the fragile nature of trust within relationships. It’s a poignant reminder to safeguard family dynamics and values.
Personal Rating: 8/10
