Prabowo Meets Joe Biden
President Prabowo Subianto’s visit to the White House to meet with President Joe Biden marks a new chapter in cooperation between Indonesia and the United States, which this year celebrates 75 years of diplomatic relations. The meeting focused on critical issues such as climate change, conflict in the Middle East, and tensions in the South China Sea, with both nations demonstrating a commitment to maintaining regional stability and security.
Prabowo referred to the United States as a “great friend” of Indonesia, acknowledging the longstanding strategic and economic support provided by the U.S. Additionally, their shared commitment to freedom of navigation, airspace rights, and sovereignty according to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) reflects a determination to keep maritime areas open and safe for global trade.
Furthermore, their agreement to implement the 2002 Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea (DoC) and to support ASEAN’s development of a Code of Conduct (CoC) demonstrates the two nations’ strong intentions to encourage peaceful resolution in the region. This effort is reinforced by recalling the 2016 arbitration ruling that affirms legitimate boundaries in those waters.
This visit underscores the importance of increasingly close bilateral relations between Indonesia and the United States in addressing global and regional challenges. Strong cooperation between these two major countries in the region will have a positive impact on stability and prosperity in Southeast Asia and beyond.
