ASEAN Summit 2025: Connecting Southeast Asia to the World

The ASEAN Summit convened over a two-day period from 25 to 26 May 2025, serving as a crucial gathering of Southeast Asian heads of government to endorse strategic decisions that had been previously deliberated at the ministerial level.

Many may remain unaware of the significant impact ASEAN has on our daily lives. Our ability to live, work, and travel in peace is largely underpinned by this framework of regional cooperation, established in 1967 to promote regional stability and peace.

The enduring harmony among Southeast Asian nations—such as Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, and Singapore—is not solely the product of bilateral diplomacy. Rather, it is largely attributable to ASEAN as a platform that prioritizes dialogue over conflict. This stands in stark contrast to other regions of the world where tensions remain high and the risk of interstate conflict is ever-present.

Malaysia has played a pivotal role in shaping and steering ASEAN’s trajectory from the outset. From the establishment of ASEAN+3 in 1997, to the inauguration of the East Asia Summit (EAS) in 2005, and the formation of the ASEAN Community in 2015—each milestone has been facilitated by Malaysia’s leadership as a respected and neutral regional intermediary, often referred to as an “honest broker.”

Today, under the ASEAN Community Vision 2045, the organization aspires to become a formidable geopolitical and geoeconomic bloc in an increasingly multipolar world. This year also marks the first-ever trilateral summit involving ASEAN, the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), and China—an initiative that broadens the scope of cooperation between Southeast Asia, the Arab world, and major global powers such as China.

Amidst these developments, one thing remains clear: ASEAN is not merely a diplomatic institution; it is the backbone of regional stability.

As citizens and future leaders, we must not underestimate ASEAN’s role. It is not merely a matter for elites or political leaders—it is fundamentally about the future of the region we collectively call home.
