Trump Shocks the Arab World: Normalization with Syria and a Massive Arms Deal with Saudi Arabia

In a surprising geopolitical shift, former U.S. President Donald Trump announced the full withdrawal of sanctions against Syria, coupled with an expressed intent to normalize relations with the country's new government, now led by Ahmad al-Sharaa — better known as Abu Mohammad al-Jolani, a former militant leader previously linked to al-Qaeda.

This development has sparked significant global reaction, particularly due to al-Jolani’s controversial background and ongoing concerns regarding alleged human rights violations against minority groups under his leadership.

Simultaneously, Trump succeeded in securing a landmark arms deal with Saudi Arabia valued at $142 billion, alongside a pledged investment of $600 billion into the U.S. economy.

This marks a notable strategic shift — from a policy of isolation and sanctions to one grounded in realpolitik and pragmatic normalization, seemingly aimed at advancing economic and strategic interests.

What is particularly striking is the complete absence of any reference to the Palestinian issue. No statements were made, nor were any commitments offered. This signals a broader trend among Arab states: a growing prioritization of national stability and economic security over traditional regional solidarity.

Is this a sign of political fatigue? Or merely an adaptation to an increasingly complex global order?

The central question now becomes: What is the true direction of the Arab world? And where do we stand as observers and global citizens?

Significant transformations are unfolding before our eyes. Awareness is no longer sufficient — we must be prepared.

*Trump is reportedly scheduled to visit Qatar and the UAE next. Israel? Conspicuously absent from the itinerary — a signal in itself.
