Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV): A New or Old Threat?
The Indonesian Minister of Health, Budi Gunadi Sadikin, revealed that Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) is not a new issue in Indonesia. "Has HMPV been present in Indonesia? HMPV has existed in Indonesia for a long time. If we check whether it’s still around now, the answer is yes," said Minister Budi on Monday, January 6, 2025. He also added, "Perhaps some of us here might be affected, especially if experiencing a cough."
HMPV has drawn global attention due to its rapid spread and impact on public health. This virus, belonging to the Pneumoviridae family, affects the respiratory system and causes symptoms such as coughing, fever, runny nose, sore throat, and even shortness of breath. Children and individuals with weakened immune systems are particularly vulnerable to this infection.
Although it is not a new disease, HMPV still requires vigilance. Its symptoms are similar to those of other respiratory infections, making it challenging to differentiate without medical examination. The government has also stated that HMPV is not classified as a notifiable disease under Law No. 342 on Disease Prevention and Control.
Preventive Measures to Take
To prevent the spread of HMPV and other respiratory infections, the public is advised to:
1. Wash hands regularly with soap and running water.
2. Wear a mask in crowded places or when feeling unwell.
3. Cover the mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing using a tissue or the inside of the elbow.
4. Avoid direct contact with individuals showing symptoms.
5. Maintain a clean environment, including disinfecting frequently touched surfaces.
With heightened awareness and the application of preventive measures, we can collectively control the spread of HMPV. Maintaining personal hygiene and health is crucial to protecting yourself and those around you.
